International Center on Small Hydro Power (IN-SHP)
Wednesday,July 20,2005 Posted: 16:09 BJT(0809 GMT)  nternational Center on Small Hydro Power

Since its establishment in 1994, the International Network on Small Hydro Power (IN-SHP) has dedicated its efforts to promote global SHP development with the aim of rural electrification. Our headquarters, the International Center on Small Hydro Power (IC-SHP) is based in Hangzhou, China. We emphasize the importance of the positive environmental aspect of electricity generation through small hydropower and the beneficial socio-economic effects rural electrification by means of SHP has on the rural communities.

As part of a larger scale SHP development strategy IN-SHP plays an important role as a facilitator of cooperation through its membership network, which comprises international organizations, private and public sector enterprises and individuals committed to the promotion of SHP development worldwide. The aim of this multi-tier cooperation is to match capacities and needs of the rural communities in developing countries that continue to live without a constant supply of energy, whilst ensuring a self-sustainable mode of development. Self-sustainability will be achieved by equipping the locals themselves with the skills needed to develop their SHP potential and thereby further develop all aspects of their communities. In addition to its role as a consultative body IN-SHP has undertaken tasks such as the carrying out of prefeasibility studies, organizing training workshops, publishing materials, and holding conferences at the International Center on SHP in Hangzhou, China.
We feel it is essential to increase the awareness in developing countries about climate issues and renewable energy as source of electricity. Raising awareness among developed countries' technology experts and equipment manufacturers and investors about the invaluable role SHP can play in poverty alleviation is of equal importance, and in order to facilitate communication and understanding between these various players, IN-SHP organizes international conferences.

IN-SHP aims at the promotion of global SHP development through triangular technical and economic cooperation among developing countries, developed countries and international organizations, in order to supply rural areas in developing countries with environmentally sound, affordable and adequate energy, which will lead to: Poverty alleviation, Economic development, The increase of employment opportunities, The improvement of local living standards, and Improvements in the ecological environment.
