Japan on Monday donated around 2.5 million US dollars for a United Nations project for socially vulnerable people in Armenia.
“We are grateful to the Government of Japan for supporting the United Nations project aimed at helping vulnerable groups in Armenia, including refugees and internally displaced people suffering from poverty and lack of access to social services,” said Kandeh K. Yumkella, UNIDO Director-General.
The assistance, totalling 2,484,900.00 US dollars (approximately 255.94 million yen) went to the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, to a project entitled “Sustainable Livelihood for Socially Vulnerable Refugees, Internally Displaced and Local Families” in Armenia.
The project – which will be implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) together with UNHCR, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF - will help renovate old buildings to provide housing units for vulnerable households, encourage beneficiaries to get involved in community-based organizations such as women’s group, support the establishment of small and medium entrepreneurship, and provide start-up loans to some 100 businesses and support community-owned programmes. It will also feature training courses on entrepreneurship and business skills, operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems, and for health care providers.
UNIDO is currently implementing several projects financed by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security with the support of the Japanese Government. These include projects which aim to reduce the humanitarian deficits of war-affected rural communities, promote auxiliary income-generating activities in Afghanistan or empower poor rural communities in Malawi. They also support sustainable livelihood recovery among conflict-affected populations in Sri Lanka as well as disadvantaged communities in Indonesia.
